Massaruokaa - Polymer clay food

Olen tässä pitkän ajan kuluessa saanut aikaiseksi Fimo-massasta jotain muutakin kuin nuken ja ruukkuja. Nämä ovat vielä ensimmäisiä yritelmiä, enkä ole kaikkiin ollenkaan tyytyväinen. Saavat kuitenkin kelvata siihen asti, että teen parempia. Porkkanat kuitenkin onnistuivat mielestäni hyvin.

During a long time I have managed to make also other things out of Fimo than just the doll and flower pots. These are just my first tryouts, and I'm not happy with some of them. But they will have to do until I make better ones. I think the carrots turned out OK, though.

Olen tyytyväinen kokonaisiin omenoihini, mutta en noihin pilkottuihin. Kuori on liian paksu, ja kun karoja yritti veistää, massa lytistyi väkisinkin, vaikka laitoinkin omenat ensin jääkaappiin. Käytin näihin Fimo Softia. Ensi kerralla taidan käyttää Fimo Classicia, joka on ilmeisesti jämäkämpää.

I'm happy with the whole apples, but not the sliced ones. The skin is too thick, and when i tried to carve the cores, the clay was squashed even though I put the apples in the fridge first. I used Fimo Soft to make these. Next time I think I'll use Fimo Classic that's apparently firmer.

Tämän kakkupalan päällä oleva valmiista massatangosta leikattu mansikka näyttää luonnottoman suurelta. Pitää ehkä joskus kokeilla itse tehdä pienempää mallia.

The strawberry  on top of this piece of cake is from a bought cane and it look unnaturally large. Maybe I should try to make smaller ones sometime in the future.

At the club meeting Piikko loaned me a Fiskars flower hand punch, that I have used to make these gingerbread cookies. I got the tip on how to make these from Maria Malmström's blog.

Kukkaruukkuja ja swappi - Flower pots and a swap

Toissa sunnuntaina meillä oli taas kerho. Aiheena oli kukat, mutta en kyllä saanut yhtään kukkaa aikaiseksi. Kaikki aika meni etukäteen tekemieni kukkaruukkujen hiomiseen ja maalaamiseen.

Two weekends ago we had our club meeting. We were supposed to make flower, but I didn't manage to make any. I spent the entire time sanding and painting the flower pots that I had made earlier.

Meillä oli myös pieni ystävänpäivä-swap. Sain Söpökadun Piikolta tällaisen paketin. Nyt alkaa olla nukkekodin keittiön varusteita aika hyvin kasassa.

We had also a little Valentine's Day swap. I got these from Söpökatu's Piikko. Now I have even more items for my kitchen.

Itse laitoin pakettiin alla olevan kakun, samanlaisen nallen, jonka sain Piikolta sekä sellaisen Kiroileva Siili -ystävänpäiväkortin.

I made a package that included the cake in the picture below, the same kind of teddy bear, that I got from Piikko and a humorous Valentine's Day card.

Nuken valmistus, osa 3 - Making a doll, part 3

Nukke on taas vähän edennyt. Maalasin kasvot akryylimaaleilla. Tosin poskipuna ja luomiväri on ennen paistoa pensselillä laitettua pastelliliitujauhoa. Tästä nukesta tuli vähän meikatumman näköinen, kuin oli tarkoitus, mutta eipä tuo haittaa, kun ei tästä kuitenkaan tullut mummoa.

I have made some progress with the doll. I painted the face with acrylic paints. The blush and eyeshadow are pastel chalk powder that I applied with a paintbrush before baking. This doll's face looks more made up than I intended, but it doesn't matter, since this doll didn't turn out be an old lady after all.

Sain tehtyä vartalonkin. Käärin rautalangan päälle vanumattoa, jonka päälle pyöritin jotain villasekoitelankaa, joka löytyi kaapista. (Saattaa olla 7 Veljestä.)

I managed to make the body as well. I wrapped the wire with wadding and some wool mix yarn that I found in my closet.

Seuraavaksi on vuorossa hiukset ja vaatteet. Vaatteita varten ostin taas kerran Huuto.netistä alla olevan kirjan. Aion tehdä vaatteista riisuttavat, joten kirjan ohjeita pitää vähän muuttaa. Myös kengät pitäisi saada aikaiseksi. Olen varma, että pilaan koko nuken viimeistään hiustenkiinnitysvaiheessa. Kerron luultavasti jo ensi viikolla, miten kävi.

Next I need to make hair and clothes. I bought a used book from the internet that you can see in the photo below. I plan to make removable clothes, so the patterns need to be changed a bit. I also have to make some shoes. I'm pretty sure that I'll ruin my doll when I'm trying put the hair in place. I'll tell you probably next week how that turned out.

Tässä vielä seuraavan nuken alkua. Tästä nukesta tulee 16-senttinen pappa. On hyvä, että sellaisen massan, johon on tarttunut liikaa pölyä ja roskaa voi käyttää nuken runkona, koska se peittyy toiseen massakerrokseen. Ei siis tarvitse heittää sitäkään roskiin.

Here's the beginnings of the next doll. This is going to be a 16 cm old man. It's good that if you have clay that's got too much dust, lint and other things attached to it, you can use it as a base for your doll. It's going to be covered with another layer of clay anyway. This way clay won't go to waste.

Nuken valmistus, osa 2 - Making a doll, part 2

Nuken teko jatkuu. Hidasta on, kun ei ole vielä minkäänlaista rutiinia. Nukke on saanut nyt korvat, torson ja jalat. Nuken pää ja torso alkavat olla silotusta vaille valmiit. Kädet laitan paikoilleen viimeisenä.

Doll making continues. It's coming on slowly, because I'm doing everything for the first time. The doll now has ears, upper body, legs and feet. The head and torso are almost finished. They only need to be smoothed. I'll attach the hands when everything else is done.

In the photo below you can see the how the clay has stuck on the pre-painted eyes. That's why I'm going to paint the next doll's eyes afterwards.

In this picture you can see all the dust that got stuck in the clay. Luckily, it's the back of the head and will be covered with hair.

Olen jo oppinut tätä nukkea tehdessä kaikenlaista. Ensi kerralla osaan siis toivottavasti tehdä kaiken vähän paremmin. Teeen nuken valmistuttua vinkkilistan siitä, mitä kannattaa ja mitä ei kannata tehdä. Unohdin muuten mainita osassa 1, että olen tosiaan käsieni lisäksi käyttänyt toistaiseksi nuken teossa apuna vain nuppineulaa ja sukkapuikkoa.

I have learned a lot while making this doll. Next time I'll hopefully be able to do everything a little better. When the doll is finished I'll give tips of what to do and what not to do. By the way, I forgot to mention in part 1 that so far in addition to my hands I have only used a pin and a knitting needle as sculpting tools.

Kukkateline - Flower stand

Olin viime sunnuntaina ensimmäistä kertaa Jyväskylän Nukkis-Ystävät -kerhossa. http://nukkisystavat.blogspot.fi/. Siellä tehtiin kukkatelineitä. Minulla oli hieman liian isoa rimaa, joten ajattelin tehdä kahdesta vaihtoehdosta isomman. Muut kerholaiset olivat ällistyttävän nopeita, vaikka muistaakseni kaikki muut tekivätkin paikan päällä sen pienemmän version. Kun toiset olivat jo valmiita, minä vielä katkoin ja liimailin puutikkuja. En siis saanut telinettäni silloin valmiiksi ja viimein tänään viimeistelin sen.

Last Sunday I joined my home town's dollhouse club for the first time. http://nukkisystavat.blogspot.fi/. We made flower stands. I had a little too wide wood strip with me, so I decided to make the larger one out of the two choices that we had. The other members of the club were amazingly fast, although I believe that all the others made the smaller stand. When the others were already finished, I was still cutting and cluing my wood strips. I didn't finish my stand then, but I finally finished it today.

 

Materiaaleina käytin 5x5 mm puurimaa, cocktailtikkuja ja varrastikkuja. Laatikon pohja on tehty asetaattikalvosta ja sen alle liimatusta tulostetusta kuvasta. Maali on taas tuttu Plus Colorin väri Off White.

The materials that I used were 5x5 mm wood strip, cocktail sticks and kebab sticks. The bottom that you can see in the picture below is made of acetate sheet and a printed image glued underneath it. The paint is again Plus Color's Off white.

Nuken valmistus, osa 1 - Making a doll, part 1

Hullu kun olen, päätin tehdä nukkekotinukkeni itse. Tähän sain innostuksen, kun näin Facebookin Nukkekotiharrastajat-ryhmässä Soile Touran tekemiä ihania nukkeja. Kokemusta ihmishahmojen muotoilemisesta minulla ei ollut lainkaan.

I'm probably crazy, but I decided to make my own dolls. I got inspired to do that when I saw the lovely dolls made by Soile Toura in a Finnish doll house enthusiasts' Facebook group. I have no previous experience on sculpting human forms.

Tein aika paljon taustatutkimusta ennen kuin uskalsin ryhtyä mihinkään. Olen lukenut netistä useita miniatyyrinukkien teko-ohjeita ja katsonut aiheesta myös Youtube-videoita. Ihmisillä on eri tapoja tehdä nukkeja, joten oli paljon asioita, jotka piti päättää ennen aloittamista. Kyselin Soileltakin, miten hän nukkensa tekee, mutta päädyin kuitenkin pääasiassa hänen tavoistaan poikkeaviin ratkaisuihin ainakin näin ensimmäisen nukkeni kohdalla.

I did quite a lot of research before I dared to start sculpting. I have read many miniature dolls tutorials and watched Youtube videos on the subject. People have different styles when they sculpt dolls, so I had to decide many things before I even started. I even asked Soile how she makes her dolls, but I have decided to take a different approach on many issues, at least with this first doll.

Ostin Sinellistä Fimo Puppen for Miniatures -nukkemassaa, joka on nimensä mukaisesti tarkoitettu miniatyyrinukkien tekoon. Päätin tehdä nukkeni tukirangan rautalangasta. Ostin sitä varten Tiimarista sellaista puutikun ympärille kierrettyä rautalankaa. Sen pyöritin kierteelle kaksinkerroin, koska se on melko ohutta ja massa ottaa ilmeisesti paremmin kiinni sellaiseen epätasaiseen pintaan. Kuitenkin, kun yritin tehdä nuken kättä suoraan rautalangan päälle, siitä ei tullut mitään. Lanka liikkui koko ajan. Päätin siis tehdä käden ensin tikun päässä ja siirtää sitten rautalankaan. Katsotaan, miten siinä käy. En ole tehnyt sitä vielä.

I bought Fimo Puppen for Miniatures polymer clay, that is made for doll making. I decided to use wire for the armature. I bent and twisted the wire that I have, because the it's rather thin and apparently polymer clay attaches better to uneven surface. However, when I tried to sculpt a had directly over the wire, it didn't work out. The wire kept moving inside the clay. So I decided to sculpt the hand first on a wooden cocktail stick and the transfer it on the wire. Let's see how that turns out. I haven't done it yet.

Aloitin siis nuken tekemisen vasemmasta kädestä. Mallia otin tuolta http://www.cdhm.org/tutorials/learn-detailed-hand-sculpting.html sekä kirjasta 1/12 Scale Character Figures for the Dolls'House. Käytin aikaa yhden käden tekemiseen yhteensä noin kolme tuntia, ja siihen pitää vieläkin tehdä pieniä muutoksia.

I started the sculpting with the doll's left hand. As a reference I used this website http://www.cdhm.org/tutorials/learn-detailed-hand-sculpting.html and the book 1/12 Scale Character Figures for the Dolls'House. It took me altogether about three hours to sculpt the one hand, and I still need to make a few tiny changes.

 

Luulin, että toinen käsi menisi helpommin, mutta se olikin oikeastaan vaikeampaa, kun siitä piti tehdä mahdollisimman samanlainen ensimmäisen kanssa. Alla olevassa kuvassa näkyvät molemmat kädet, mutta oikea käsi ei ole vielä ihan valmis. Myös käsivarret menevät molemmissa uusiksi, koska niihin on uponnut niin paljon pölyhiukkasia, etten jaksa poimia niitä nuppinaulalla pois. Sen takia en edes tehnyt niitä samanlaisiksi.

I thought that it would be easier to sculpt the second hand, but in fact it was more difficult, because it had to be as similar to the other hand as possible. The picture below shows both hands, but the right hand is not completely finished yet. I'll also make new forearms, because they are so full of tiny dust particles, that I can't be bothered to pluck them all out with a pin. That's also the reason why I didn't make them similar at this point.

Vartaloa varten tein tukirankaan pään kohdalle pienen pallon, ohuen kaulan ja torson alun, jotka paistoin. Massa tarttuu jo paitettuun massaan kiinni, eikä tarvitse enää huolehtia rautalangan liikkumisesta.

I made a tiny ball for head, a thin neck and a beginning of a torso on the wire armature and I baked them.
Polymer clay will stick on to the already baked clay and now I don't have to worry about the wire moving.

Silmät tein etukäteen. Otin yhtä paljon valkoista sekä läpikuultavaa Fimoa ja sekoitin ne keskenään. Tein siitä syntyneestä massasta halkaisijaltaan 4 millin palloja, jotka paistoin ja maalasin akryyliväreillä. Saattaa olla, että silmän iiris on hieman liian iso, mutta jos se alkaa työn jatkuessa häiritsemään, kaivan sitten nukelta silmät päästä ja teen uudet. =)

I made the eyes before I started on the doll. I took equal amounts of white and translucent Fimo and mixed them. With that mixture I made 4 mm diameter balls, baked them and painted with acrylic paints. It might be that the iris is a little too large. If it starts bothering me when I continue the sculpting, I'll just gouge the doll's eyes out and make new ones. =)

 

 

Tältä nukkeni näyttää tällä hetkellä. Voi olla, että loppujen lopuksi tästä matamista tuleekin ihan eri näköinen. Valmistus on vielä pahasti kesken.

This is how my doll looks at the moment. It could be that this old lady will look a whole lot different when she's finished. The sculpting is not even nearly done.

Jouduin muuten kerran kiskaisemaan rouvan naamasta puolet pois, kun huomasin, että päästä on tulossa liian korkea. Kannattaa siis muistaa aina välillä mitata, jotta mittasuhteet pysyvät oikeina.

By the way, at one point I had to rip off half of the lady's face when I realised the head was too tall. It's good to measure everything once in while in order to keep the proportions correct.
